The majority of nerve treatments begin with determining the source of the problem. Nerve entrapment or the pinching or trapping of nerves, is the most common cause of nerve disorders. The soft tissues that surround nerves are designed to allow them to slide and stretch. Inflammation or disorders in the soft tissues cause a nerve to lose its ability to glide easily when it becomes trapped or constricted.
Benefits of nerve flossing and nerve mobilization:
Nerve flossing has several advantages, including reduced discomfort surrounding the irritated nerve, increased strength and range of motion in the affected area, and restoration of feeling and sensibility in the treated area. Following nerve treatment, you will be able to resume your favorite activities with less pain and greater ability.
Nerve Entrapment symptoms:
Nerve entrapment is accompanied by a variety of symptoms. Nerve entrapment can result in discomfort, tingling, numbness, muscle weakening, and even muscle function loss. Icing and anti- inflammatory drugs can assist with some of these symptoms, but several non-surgical nerve therapies can reduce nerve pain and eliminate the underlying cause more efficiently.
Nerve flossing and low back pain:
A patient may have pain, tingling, numbness, and even weakness in the hip, buttock, and leg if the sciatic nerve is crushed or pinched. A herniated disc is the most prevalent cause of sciatica in people under the age of 60. Spinal stenosis (a narrowing of the spaces in the spine through which nerves move) and spondylolisthesis are the most common causes of sciatica in older persons (when one vertebra slides forward on the neighboring vertebra). A nerve root normally flows freely in and out of the spine through the intervertebral foramen, holes between each vertebra (IVF). Tension on the sciatic nerve is
created by movements or activities such as hamstring stretches or punting a football, which pulls the nerve roots out of the IVFs. When we stand up straight and stare down at our feet, the spinal cord is pulled upward, and the nerve roots are pulled into the IVFs. Chiropractors will use a technique called nerve flossing to treat sciatica. The back and forth motion of dental floss, like flossing teeth, is conceptually similar to the back and forth motion of the five nerve roots that unite into the sciatic nerve.
Extend the head/neck forward and then flex the foot/ankle upward to draw the nerve roots out of the
IVF (toes toward the nose). Point the foot/ankle downward while flexing the head/neck forward to bring the nerve back into the IVF (chin to chest). Repeat as long as the pain or other symptoms do not get worse. The goal is to free up the nerve root in the IVF by eliminating adhesions.
Nerve flossing is usually started by a chiropractor to ensure that the activity is well tolerated and safe before the patient can do it at home multiple times a day. This helps relieve sciatic nerve stress while simultaneously extending the hamstrings, which are commonly tight in people with low back pain.
Nerve Flossing:
The use of exercises and techniques to restore fluid sliding and stretching of the nerves within surrounding soft tissues is known as nerve flossing. Nerve flossing is a technique that involves making certain movements while stretching muscles to encourage nerves and soft tissues to work without snagging or pinching. Chiropractors initially demonstrate proper nerve flossing exercise techniques to ensure that the patient understands how to perform the movements at home. Nerve flossing treatments that are difficult or impossible to accomplish alone can also be assisted by a chiropractor. Nerve flossing can then be administered to assist you to keep on track with your treatment plan.
