Treating Sports Injuries

Sports injuries are injuries that people are prone to when playing different sports. These injuries may affect any area of the body and may even cause a lot of trouble if not treated at the right time and in the right manner. Treatment of sports injuries depends on the severity of the injury and whether the injury is chronic or acute. Sports injuries may cause a lot of pain, swelling as well as numbness in the affected area.

The following are the most common methods that can be used to treat sports injuries:
  • RICE Method: The RICE method is a method that involves a combination of different techniques that can be used to treat the sports injury. The RICE method involves Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Rest requires a person to stop playing the sport and keep weight off the affected area. Ice refers to using an ice pack or a cold pack on the affected area so that the swelling can be dealt with. Compression involves using a bandage or compression device on the affected area so that an even weight can be put on the affected area to reduce the swelling as well as the numbness. Elevation requires keeping the affected area above a specific level or an elevated level so that swelling can be reduced.
  • Medication: Medicines are commonly used to treat sports injuries. Medication is however recommended when the sports injury is not a very severe one. Medicines can be used to treat pain and swelling on the affected area. Medication may sometimes also involve injections that may be given on the affected area to reduce the swelling and numbness. Injections however take some time to show their effect and may be administered for a few days for properly treating the injury.
  • Surgery: Surgery can be used to treat sports injury when the injury is of a very severe type. Surgery may be used to repair torn connective tissues and also realign bones after a fracture. Most sports injuries do not require a surgery. The type of surgery and the surgical process used may depend upon the type of sports injury.
  • Thermotherapy: Thermotherapy involves the use of hot packs and heat treatments for treating sports injury. Heat therapy helps to reduce muscular pain and also increase the blood flow to the affected area to expand the blood vessels so that the swelling because of the injury can be reduced.
